The Bach Flower Research Programme - a website dedicated to the studies of Dr Bach.

Dr Edward Bach (1886-1936) trained and worked in conventional medicine and homoeopathy in the early part of the last century.  His medical researches led him to the realization that ill health originates in our mental and emotional state rather than in the physical body.  Over a period of years and through intense study of the positive nature of plants, he was able to identify negative psychological conditions and in each case find an appropriate remedy.
His philosophy was simple “Treat the patient, not the disease”.

How are they made?
Flower Essences are simply made by placing the flowering parts in a bowl of spring water and leaving them in direct sunlight.  The water, the flowers, the place and the sun combine to make the essence, and hold the pattern of healing properties from the individual plant.  The plants used must be free of environmental contaminants and should be used at the height of their bloom and vitality.

The Bach Flower Remedies
The 38 remedies discovered by Dr Bach are made from a range of flowering plants and trees.  They should be viewed as a way of restoring peace of mind and happiness, allowing the body to fight illness by strengthening its own resources.
There are many different ways of selecting a single flower remedy, or making up different combinations (using up to 6 remedies).  The 38 remedies fall into 3 groups.  Each remedy states which Dr Bach described as a positive and negative aspect – he saw the negative conditions as the true cause of illness and disease.  The flowers embody the positive state – their natural vibrations help us to be happy and to return to health.

The Twelve Healers
These are the “type” remedies that describe your personality and kind of person you are:
Agrimony, Cerato, Centaury, Chicory, Clematis, Gentian, Impatiens, Mimulus, Rock Rose, Scleranthus, Vervain, Water Violet.

The Seven Helpers
These are the remedies for chronic (long term) conditions which describe how you have become accustomed to dealing with life.  They are support remedies, often used in combination with a chosen remedy from the 12 healers:
Gorse, Heather, Oak, Olive, Rock Water, Vine, Wild Oat.

The Second Nineteen
These remedies relate to reactive or emotional states arising in everyday life:
Aspen, Beech, Crab Apple, Chestnut Bud, Cherry Plum, Elm, Holly, Honeysuckle, Hornbeam, Larch, Mustard, Pine, Red Chestnut, Star of Bethlehem, Sweet Chestnut, Walnut, White Chestnut, Wild Rose, Willow.

Benefit is derived from small regular use rather than volume.  An inappropriate remedy will not hurt or cause adverse reaction.  They can be given quite safely to children or babies.
